Salalah:
Located southeast of Muscat, Salalah lies in Omans Dhofar region
and is famed for its frankincense, camels and the annual Khareef
season (monsoon). Salalah has a unique charm with its coconut
groves and banana plantations growing right to the waters edge.
Its beautiful beaches of white sand are a haven for sun bathers,
swimmers and for people who love the sea. Stretching along the
coastline, the region is a goldmine of sights, sounds and leisure
activities to both tourists and residents alike. Known for its
glorious history, rich cultural heritage and wonders of nature,
Salalah is also a major contributor to the economic boom of
the Sultanate of Oman.
Salalah enjoys a temperate climate through most of the year.
The town also receives rainfall due to the south-east monsoon
- this period (late June to early September) is known as the
khareef season. Salalah is a city of antiquity, boasting both
the ruins of a palace reputed to have belonged to the Queen
of Sheba and the resting place of the biblical prophet Job in
the nearby Jebel al Qar. Legend has it that Salalah was the
final resting place of Nabi Imran, father of the Virgin Mary.
Being the most densely populated city in the Dhofar region,
Salalah has a modern port, hospitals, schools, colleges and
a wide range of accommodation for both short and long staying
visitors. Salalah is well connected and accessible by air and
road. Just an hour’s flight from the capital city of Muscat
brings you face to face with nature in all its splendour and
glory.
Muscat, the capital city of Oman is serviced by a host of international
airlines and can easily be reached from any major city of the
world. There are direct flights to Muscat from London, Frankfurt,
Zurich, Dubai, Kuwait, Abu Dhabi, Doha, Riyadh, Beirut and Cairo.
There are also good connections from the US and Asia on major
airlines such as Emirates, British Airways, Swiss Air, Lufthansa
and Air France.
The ancient lands of Arabia and their mysterious ways of life
have always held an air of romance. The friendliness and genuine
warmth of the people is firmly rooted in their traditions, where
courtesy and hospitality are among the most highly prized virtues.
Salalah offers an authentic taste of Arabia, its traditional
lifestyle and values expressed in the glowing architecture,
aromatic food and the scent of frankincense and sandalwood.
The rugged beauty of its fertile plains, its fresh water springs,
its bustling souks and tropical landscape leave a lasting impression
on the visitors mind.
Known as the “perfume capital of Arabia”, thanks
to its frankincense-producing trees, the city souks sell plenty
of this exotic and fragrant incense. In earlier times, frankincense
was valued even more than gold.
The city is a popular destination to tourist who are attracted
by its incredibly pleasant weather. Visitors from across the
Persian Gulf flock to Salalah to avoid the harsh heat of the
region nearly doubling the town’s population during the
monsoon season. The city is filled with an air of festivity
created by numerous fairs and celebrations held during what
is known as the Khareef Festival. The climate also supports
wildlife more commonly associated with East Africa, such as
the leopard and hyena. Salalah is a wonderful mix of pleasure,
enjoyment and informality in one of the most beautiful destinations
of Oman.
